Can you call 911 or the police on your Windows 11 device?

Officially, no. Microsoft Teams allows you to call the police, though.

  • If you encounter a message on Windows 11 suggesting you call the police, it’s most probably a scam.
  • Someone can also trick you by playing around with command prompts, especially if someone else uses your Windows 11 device.
  • However, it can also be a malware, so you better take steps to protect your device against it.

It’s true: Windows 11 might not be stable yet, but the operating system is good when it comes to PC gaming, content creation, and generally, big and demanding stuff. Its AI capabilities, with Windows Copilot coming soon to it, will also transform it into a creative hub for pretty much anything.

But for calling 911 of the police? Officially, no. You cannot call 911 or the police on your Windows 11 device. Microsoft Teams allows you to do so, in special situations, but Windows 11 is not capable of allowing you to call 911, natively, from it.

However, it seems that a Reddit user experienced something similar to calling 911 on Windows 11. Or at least, Windows 11 suggests the user call 911 when someone is connected to their home network.

The prompt appears to be very similar to the Windows 11 dialog menu design, and it reads, almost officially:

You’re about to be signed out. Windows has detected that an unknown device has connected to your home network, If you think that you are alone call 911 immediately.

Calling 911 on Windows 11: Is it real or is it a scam?

Well, it can be anything, but not official. That’s the least we can say. You can actually use command prompts to generate a similar message that will end up with your device shutting down.

shutdown /s /c "Your computer will do x unless you do y"

By typing this command, your Windows 11 display will show up a similar image to the one above, and your computer will shut down. (I tried it and it worked, but I didn’t manage to capture the screen on time).call 911 on windows 11

Using this method, you can generate any message, including one that would suggest you should call the police.

However, the other way is that your computer is probably infected with malware, and we all know that malware software manifests itself in various, strange ways on your computer, until it reaches its goal. In that case, you should scan your PC and consider installing anti-malware software. Or, use Windows Defender.

But no, you can’t call 911 or any other police services natively from your Windows 11.
