Qualcomm is set to compete with the likes of Intel, and AMD in the PC CPU market starting August/Septemeber 2024, as the company will get its first PC CPUs ready for the future Windows AI devices.

Cristiano Amon, the CEO of the company, revealed the news at the Q1 2024 earnings conference, in a discussion with investors, saying:

We’re tracking to the launch of products with this chipset tied with the next version of Microsoft Windows that has a lot of the Windows AI capabilities. We’re still maintaining the same date, which is driven by Windows, which is mid-2024, getting ready for back-to-school.

Microsoft is set to release the next Windows this year, most probably in the August/September period, and the OS will not only feature an essential AI part meant to enhance the experience of interacting with Windows, but the Redmond-based tech giant is also exploring various capabilities in which this Windows version could also be switched to Windows on Arm.

As you might know, Windows on Arm is a light version of the Windows OS, capable of stronger connection signals (Wi-Fi), and efficient battery usage, making it perfect for mobile devices, such as ultraportable laptops.

Future Surface laptops will make use of the CPUs designed by Qualcomm, specifically to support Windows on Arm, in a move that would potentially give Microsoft the upper hand over the competition.

The Surface laptops but many other Windows on Arm, and Windows AI devices will make use of the Qualcomm Elite X CPUs designed to stand for mobility and performance, and Cristiano Amon says these CPUs will set the industry benchmark for AI PCs.

We like that everybody is now talking about on-device AI on PC. We expect Snapdragon X Elite to set the industry benchmark for on-device gen AI and Copilot experiences in addition to leading performance and battery life for next-generation Windows PCs.
