AMD, with its latest Ryzen chips, is performing better than Intel Core Ultra at AI-based tasks, according to new benchmark tests made by the tech giant, which saw the Ryzen 7 7840U APU at 15W competing against Intel Core Ultra 7 155H at 28W.

The AMD Ryzen 7 7840U APU came back as a winner, even though both CPUs were equipped with 16 GB of LPDDR5-6400 and the latest drivers available.

Both processors run several LLMs, including Llama 2, Code Llama, Mistral AI, and RAG, and the results were impressive for AMD: when it comes to tokens per second, Ryzen 7 7840U APU performed 14% faster in Llama 2, and 17% faster in Mistral AI, as you can see below.AMD Ryzen AI

When it comes to time to first speeds, AMD Ryzen 7 7840U APU also has an impressive 79% faster in Llama 2, and 41% faster in Mistral AI.

AMD Ryzen 7 7840U APU is cheaper than Intel Core Ultra 7 155H, at $899 compared to Intel’s $999, and it’s specifically more powerful than the Ultra 7, but there are some reasons for it. First, AMD has been experimenting with AI PCs for a longer time now, and the company has updated its chipsets to be able to handle such tasks at a more optimal performance.

On the other hand, the Intel Core Ultra 7 155H has only been out for a few months, and Intel hasn’t managed to fully address the performances, but the company has an AI strategy for the months ahead, and there is no doubt it will catch up.

Qualcomm is also expected to make its CPU debut this summer and the company will release processors suited for AI tasks, with some of them being integrated into future Windows AI PCs, so it will be interesting to see just how these 3 companies will manage to compete with each other.
